What is Wet Rappeling?
Wet Rapelling is an activity that was introduced to the island of Kauai in February 2013. At the time of this writing, Island Adventures is the first and only outdoors outfitter that offers a waterfall rappelling experience. Also known as Canyoning, this exciting activity challenges the outdoor athlete to walk down the face of a waterfall.
Our tours are conducted in the Hulei'a National Wildlife Refuge, and on an adjoining private property that offers exclusive access to Papakolea Stream and to two beautiful year round private waterfalls: 30' Bamboo Falls, and 60' Dundee's Falls.

Ain't No Zipline Tour Overview (Ages 6 & Up)
The Ain't No Zipline Tour is a family-friendly kayak tour, and your introduction to waterfall rappelling. It is a combination kayak, hike, dry wall rappel, 30’ waterfall rappel, swim, and climb behind a 60’ waterfall. Check-in time is 8:00am every Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
After check-in, our participants go on to our Nawiliwili Boat Harbor base to get outfitted with rappel gear, paddles, and dry bags. After a quick paddling "how to" demo, the group departs up the Hulei'a River in double sit-on-top kayaks. The downwind run is pleasant and scenic. Depending on how strong the trade winds are pushing, the kayaking portion of the tour is about 90 minutes long.
At the end of the river, the group begins a short 15 minute walk through the Hulei'a National Wildlife Refuge to our waiting van. From there, a short six minute shuttle through a locked gate, to our field staging area. The scenic look-out at the top of our own private jungle trail is Kau Kau Hale, a comfortable, tented picnic area with restrooms.
Before heading down the trail, our certified guides will go through everything a novice needs to know to make his or her rappelling experience exciting, safe, and fun. The lesson includes hands-on practice on a vertical 25' dry dirt wall.
We then begin a ten minute hike down to the waterfalls. We re-enter the culturally significant Hulei'a Valley, home to some of Hawaii's native wetlands birds and plants. This beautiful hike takes us through a jungle forest abundant with guava, passion fruit, lauaÍe fern, noni fruit, and more. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot some of the endangered birds that live in the refuge, such as the Koloa Maoli (Hawaiian duck) or the Ala'e Ula (Hawaiian Moorhen).
The first destination and rappel challenge is at "Bamboo Falls." This pretty 30' waterfall is wide enough to accommodate three rappel routes. Although seemingly manageable, Bamboo Falls "ain't no zipline!" It is technically advanced enough to honestly test your newly acquired skills. Participants are encouraged to take a few runs here. Fantastic photo opportunities exist at this spot.
Next is a short walk up along the stream, to the 60' "Hawaiian Dundee's Falls." This is where you can get back in the water and climb behind the falls. There are more terrific photos to be taken here. After lunch, the group heads back to Da Life.
Hawaiian Dundee Falls Tour Overview (Ages 12 & Up)
For the adventure seeker looking to take the Hawaiian Dundee 60' Waterfall Rappel Challenge, it is a combination hike, dry wall rappel, 30’ waterfall rappel, and 60’ waterfall rappel. Check-in time is 8:00am on Tuesdays and 11:00am on Fridays.
Check-in begins at Da Life Outdoor Gear. You will be shuttled into the Hulei'a National Wildlife Refuge and into Hawaiian Dundee's playground (40 acres) where he will take you to private waterfalls. A safety course and instruction is given, and you will then practice on a 25' dry wall. The hike to the waterfall is equivalent to 8 flights of stairs.
Bamboo Falls is the 30' waterfall, and preparation for the Hawaiian Dundee. After mastering your skills, you move onto the 60' waterfall called, "Hawaiian Dundee Falls." Here you will experience the thrill of walking on water as you rappel down the Hawaiian Dundee Falls. Reward yourself with lunch back at the top of the hill, where you will enjoy a gourmet deli sandwich by Deli & Bread, voted Kauai's best deli, overlooking 241 acres of wildlife refuge. The tour ends with a shuttle back to Da Life Outdoor Gear as you say a hui hou to the tour guides.
Meet Charlie aka the "Hawaiian Dundee"
And, saving the best for last, odds are excellent of meeting our trailblazer and safety enforcer Charlie Cobb-Adams, aka the Hawaiian Dundee. Charlie and his wife, Tanya, manage Island Adventures. Their roots go back to earliest Polynesia. Tanya traces her ancestry to Tahitian royalty (no less). Charlie traces his to Kalalau Valley, and the forbidden island of Niihau.
Hawaiian Dundee is a skilled trail builder, and the island's "go to" guy when hikers go missing, so rest assured, you are in good hands when he introduces you to Kauai’s only tour opportunity to walk down the face of a waterfall.
Where do You Check-in for Your Island Adventure?
